Phil,

The blog of yours that I read was the one in the link you left in the comment above.

My husband's blog is actually a compilation of several photographers. Here's the main link: http://blog.syracuse.com/photographers/

Here's the part my husband, Peter, did:
http://blog.syracuse.com/photographers/peter_chen/

Wish he stuck with it longer.

As far as the newsletter -- I'd be happy to send you one. E-mail me at savethemedia@yahoo.com, so I'll have your e-mail address. I'll just reply to that.

Thanks again Gina. I already do a "behind the scenes" thing for the stories that I shoot, telling how I develop the stories, the challenges and lessons learnt. One thing that I will have to work on for my blogs ( I administer the new photo blog at my paper http://communities.canada.com/montrealgazette/blogs/thelens/default.aspx), is linking like you said.
Phil,

Sounds like you're doing a lot already to promote what you're doing as a photojournalist. That's fantastic!

I agree with you that newsletters probably work best when you have a beat. However, if you have a blog, and you blog regularly, you could create some type of newsletter that features your blog posts. Put something on your blog, so folks could subscribe. The newsletter could be a reminder of what's posted on your blog.

Or you could give behind the scenes tidbits of the process of making the video. (You shot three hours and have to cut it to three minutes. My husband is a photojournalist who focuses on video, so I know the drill.)

Or maybe you could do a monthly newsletter, showcase your video story, explain how you made it and solicit blog readers' (newsletter subscribers') ideas for future video stories.

Or you could depart completely from that and do a newsletter that gives photography tips. Non-photographers might eat that up because so many are quite ignorant of how to make a good picture. Simple things: Don't put the subject in the center of the field of vision in ever shot; use different angles for interest; tips on lighting; get closer.

The newsletter helps draw people in, so my example is just that -- an example. There's lots of ways to do it.

Good luck!

Again, good tips Gina. Not sure how I'd make it work as a photojournalist though. I don't have a beat, and the subject matter for my stories are quite varied. Right now I do an average of 1 video story a month, which I link to through my blog so that I can track number of hits. I promote the story by placing the blog link in the status section of my Facebook profile and in Twitter.

Any suggestions?<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('407','Phil Carpenter'); return false;">Reply</a> - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('407','Phil Carpenter','Again, good tips Gina. Not sure how I\'d make it work as a photojournalist though. I don\'t have a beat, and the subject matter for my stories are quite varied.
